CHAMBER POT
Originally owned by the Fairbanks family, this chamber pot is a symbol of everyday life in the Victorian era. Before the modern luxury of plumbing, residents relieved themselves outdoors in the outhouse. So as to not have to exit the home in the middle of the night to relieve oneself, chamber pots were kept near the bed. Emptied and cleaned as part of the quotidian chores of the morning, chamber pots are now bygone relics of material culture.
This piece is part of a set from the 1850s, before George Rainsford Fairbanks arrived in Fernandina. As a finely decorated ceramic piece, it adheres to the chamber pot styles of the time.
