Unlocking the Past, Celebrating the Present, Preparing for the Future

Amelia Island and the surrounding area is the location of some of the nation’s earliest European activity and prior to 1975 there was no one to tell our story.  With this need in mind, a group of local residents began meeting and founded the “Fernandina Historical Museum” in November of 1977.

Without the Museum our story with all of the interesting people and events of yesterday and today may be lost in the bigger picture. Without a local Veteran’s History Project and Heritage Keepers Project the voices of local heroes and local residents would be lost. The Amelia Island Museum of History (AIMH) is dedicated to the education about and preservation of artifacts which represent all forms of life and culture in NassauCounty.  Its mission is “to bring alive and preserve the area’s rich history”; it is the caretaker and disseminator of that exciting local history.

Today the museum consists of 4 professional full-time staff, a part-time collections manager, 3 part-time auxiliary staff, and boasts over 200 active volunteers and 600 members.  The museum’s collection contains over 8,000 items and includes: photographs, books, documents, maps, objects, and digitally recorded oral histories.  The museum is currently working to digitize its collection, and at present has approximately 50% (or over 4000 items) of it available to the public online.  The museum also hosts professional exhibits, offers 7 different historical tours of the area, educational evening programs each month, and tours for all 4th grade Nassau County students as well as a children’s summer program. In addition, the museum regularly partners with other area civic organizations such as: the Fernandina Beach Public Library, the Amelia Island Film Festival, and the Book Island Festival to bring educational activities to the community.  The museum’s annual attendance has been steadily rising over the years with approximately 20,000 visitors in 2011. None of this would be possible without the generosity of our supporters.
